(Menus of the Day)

Numerous restaurants in Axarquia offer a good value menu of the day, normally served between 13.30h and 16.00h. Generally you would expect to pay around 6 euros (3.75) a head for a 3 course meal including bread and a bottle of wine between two. Although over the years we have eaten at many of these establishments we are only just beginning to compile a list. Puente del Manuel: On the crossroads between Barrida Venta Baja (1 kilometre)/ Periana (7)/ Ventas de Zafarraya (11)/ Velez-Malaga (17). From the coast this is a beautiful ride inland through mountain scenery and past Lake Vinuela.
Bar Sara We have eaten here at various times with our children and with friends. It's very popular with the local Spanish workforce and with foreigners.

On the day of review we had 4 courses - salad, fish soup, chicken in mushroom sauce for Nik, lamb chops for Candy and squid for myself followed by chocolate mousse. The cost of the meal was 6 euros each which included bread, a bottle of house wine and three lagers. The chips that accompanied the chicken and chop dishes were as good as you get anywhere being homemade and delicious.

On offer on the day of review was a choice of first course from paella, salad or fish soup. The paella was very good containing both fish and chicken and the salad was large, fresh and varied - also very good.

The main course was a choice from roast chicken, meatballs, grilled sardines or squid. Our only complaint was that this course was served while we were still eating the first course. However this is often the way that the Spanish enjoy to eat and, if forewarned, you can request this doesn't happen.

The sweet course was a choice between creme caramel (known here as flan), pineapple, kiwi, peach or rice pudding. I opted out and had coffee instead whilst Nick chose the pineapple which, although he enjoyed, was tinned.

The setting is modern-rustic, very clean with great mountain views. The cost of our 3 course meal, which included bread and a litre bottle of Soldepenas was 6 euros each.

A new Chinese restaurant facing the beach and main promenade in Torre. We have eaten here in parties large and small but, on one notable occasion, we went with friends who were celebrating their daughter's birthday. Although we only ate the menu del dia we were plied with free champagne and cake.

The cost of the 3 course menu del dia here is 4.75 euros which includes prawn crackers and a digestif. The wine is extra - a bottle of Rene Barbier for example costs 7.20 euros. The food is always excellent and the staff are very pleasant and friendly.

The first course is a choice between spring roll, salad or soup. The second is chop suey with beef, beef or chicken curry, beef with onions, sweet and sour pork or chicken, or chicken with almonds. Accompanied by rice, noodles or chips. Finally, also included, is creme caramel, ice-cream, coffee or tea.

Very popular with the Spanish for meals and tapas. We have never seen other foreigners here.

We enjoyed a 3 course meal with bread and a bottle of house wine (Vina Hogar) for 5.5 euros each. The setting is a large and clean L-shaped bar decorated mainly in white and chromium.

The first course was a choice between fish soup, chicken soup, salad or callos (chick peas and tripe). The fish soup was one of the best for a menu del dia and, apparently, the callos was also good.

For the second course we chose from garlic chicken which was tender and tasty, rosada (we think this is pollock) in batter or squid. The portions were generous but the accompanying chips, on this occasion, were tasteless.

For the sweet course we were offered flan, natillas or guajada.
