La Concepción is the most beautiful and important tropical botanical garden in Spain and one of the best in Europe. It was created, more than a century and a half ago, by Amalia Heredia Livermore and her husband Jorge Loring Oyarzabal, the Marquis of Casa Loring, in 1850 and named after one of their daughters.
Now aquired by Malaga City Hall, it has been restored and opened to the public. Tours of the gardens give a sensation of being deep within an elegant tropical forest - refreshing on a hot summer's day. On site there is a small museum containing Roman statues and mosaics and an archaeological exhibition.
